How to Build Long Lasting Healthy Habits
Sticking to healthy habits isn’t just about eating right or exercising — it’s about building routines that last. Here’s how to make your 2026 health goals actually stick.
It is common knowledge that in order to live healthy lives, it is essential to be eating clean, staying in good shape, and getting enough sleep- but it can be challenging to incorporate these basic tasks into your daily routine. No matter what your health goals are this year, here’s a few ways to make them stick.
First, start with smaller steps to make the challenge less overwhelming. For example, you don’t need to kick off the new year running a full marathon, rather start with a 15 minute jog. Once these steps feel natural, you can build on them, setting you up for success. Additionally, be as specific as possible while setting your goals so it is easier to keep track and stick to the theme. Instead of saying you want to eat healthier, make it a goal to eat at least 2 servings of vegetables per day. Being specific helps you stick to your habits over time.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), building healthy habits starts with a clear realistic plan. The CDC recommends defining your “why”, choosing specific actions that support your goals (like eating more fruits and vegetables), and measuring the goals using SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound). This kind of planning helps you know exactly what you want to accomplish, track your progress and stay on course.
One trick to help you stick to your goals is habit stacking. This is where you take something that you already do. For example, before eating breakfast, try to go on a 15 minute run. Since eating breakfast is already part of your daily routine, it will be easier to repeat the pattern. Repetition is key, so by making it a daily habit, you are training your brain to repeat the pattern unconsciously.
Making healthy choices can help you feel better, live longer, and lower your risk for serious diseases, however changing these habits can be very challenging. Research shows that becoming aware of your daily habits and understanding what triggers these unhealthy behaviors is an important first step. Setting small, realistic goals and making a clear plan can help turn healthy choices into easier, everyday actions. Changing your environment, tracking your progress, and getting support from friends and family can improve your chances of success. Being patient, learning from setbacks, and staying focused on long-term benefits can help you build and maintain healthy behaviors over time.
